Car Burning Oil? Here's What's Going On and What It Costs to Fix

The bad news: sometimes it is. Let me help you figure out which situation you're in.

What Does "Burning Oil" Mean? Your engine uses oil to lubricate moving parts. When we say an engine is "burning" oil, it means oil is getting into the combustion chamber where fuel burns, and it's being consumed along with the fuel. This shows up as blue-gray smoke from the tailpipe and a dropping oil level on the dipstick.

How Much Oil Burning Is Normal?

Here's something most people don't know: every engine burns a little bit of oil. It's part of how internal combustion engines work. The piston rings aren't a perfect seal, so a tiny amount of oil gets past them.

Most manufacturers consider up to 1 quart of oil per 1,000 miles "within normal range." That sounds like a lot, and honestly, for most healthy engines it should be much less than that. Here's a rough guide:

  • Less than 1 quart per 5,000 miles: Totally normal. Don't worry about it.
  • 1 quart per 3,000 to 5,000 miles: Worth monitoring but not alarming, especially on higher-mileage engines.
  • 1 quart per 1,000 to 2,000 miles: Something is wearing out. Time to investigate.
  • More than 1 quart per 1,000 miles: You have a real problem. Get this checked soon before it causes additional damage.

What Causes an Engine to Burn Oil

Worn Piston Rings

The piston rings seal the gap between the piston and the cylinder wall. When they wear down, oil slips past them into the combustion chamber. This is the most common cause of significant oil burning on high-mileage engines (150,000+ miles). Unfortunately, fixing this requires pulling the engine apart - it's a major repair.

Worn Valve Seals

Your engine has valves at the top of each cylinder that open and close to let air and fuel in and exhaust out. Each valve has a small rubber seal that keeps oil from dripping down the valve stem into the cylinder. These seals get hard and cracked with age and heat. The classic sign: a puff of blue smoke when you first start the car in the morning, then it clears up. That's oil that seeped past the valve seals overnight.

PCV Valve Problems

The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve is a small, cheap part that regulates pressure inside your engine. When it fails or gets stuck, it can cause excess pressure that pushes oil past seals and into the intake system. This is one of the cheapest fixes - a new PCV valve costs $5 to $25 and takes minutes to replace on most cars. Always check this first.

Turbocharged Engine Seal Leaks

If your car has a turbocharger, oil is used to lubricate the turbo bearings. When the turbo seals wear out, oil can get sucked into the intake and burned by the engine. You might notice blue smoke under acceleration and an oily residue inside the intake piping.

Wrong Oil Viscosity

Using oil that's too thin for your engine can increase oil consumption. If your car calls for 5W-30 and someone put in 0W-20, the thinner oil can slip past seals and rings more easily. Always use the oil weight specified in your owner's manual.

Design Issues on Certain Engines

Some engines are just known oil burners from the factory. Certain Subaru, Audi, and BMW engines from specific years have well-documented oil consumption issues that are considered a design characteristic, not a defect (though owners would disagree). How to Tell Your Car Is Burning Oil

  • Blue or gray smoke from the exhaust - especially on startup or acceleration.
  • Oil level drops between changes - you're adding oil regularly.
  • Low oil pressure light comes on.
  • Burning oil smell - a hot, acrid smell, especially near the exhaust or engine bay.
  • Fouled spark plugs - oil deposits on the spark plugs cause misfires and rough running.
  • Failed emissions test - burning oil increases hydrocarbon emissions.

As you can see, the range is massive. That's why diagnosis matters. A $25 PCV valve fix is worlds apart from a $4,000 piston ring job. Always start with the cheap possibilities before assuming the worst.

Can You Keep Driving?

If your engine is burning oil slowly (less than 1 quart per 3,000 miles), you can usually keep driving as long as you keep the oil topped off. Check the level every week and add oil as needed. The critical thing is to never let the oil level get too low - running an engine low on oil causes metal-on-metal contact that will destroy it fast.

If it's burning more than a quart per 1,000 miles, you're on borrowed time. The oil burning is going to foul your spark plugs, clog your catalytic converter (which costs $1,000 to $2,500 to replace), and eventually cause engine failure. Get it diagnosed and make a plan.

How to Slow Down Oil Burning

  • Use the correct oil weight. Check your owner's manual. Using a slightly heavier oil (with your mechanic's advice) can sometimes reduce consumption on older engines.
  • Change oil on schedule. Old, broken-down oil is thinner and slips past worn seals more easily.
  • Replace the PCV valve. A $10 to $25 part that can make a surprising difference.
  • Try a high-mileage oil. These oils contain seal conditioners that can help soften and swell aging seals back to their original shape. It's not a miracle, but it helps in mild cases.
