Anthony Calhoun here, ASE Master Technician. If you drive a front-wheel-drive car - and most people do - you have CV joints. They are working every second your wheels are turning, and you probably never think about them until they start clicking. That clicking sound while turning is one of the most recognizable noises in automotive repair, and it means one thing: your CV joint is on borrowed time.
Let me explain what these joints do, why they fail, and what it costs to fix them.
What Is a CV Joint?
CV stands for Constant Velocity. A CV joint is a special type of universal joint that transmits engine power from the transmission to the drive wheels while allowing the wheels to move up and down (over bumps) and turn left and right (for steering) - all without changing the speed of rotation.
Think of it this way: the transmission sits in the center of the car, and the wheels are out at the sides. Something has to connect them and deliver power while allowing the wheels to bounce and steer. That something is the CV axle - a shaft with a CV joint on each end.
Two Types of CV Joints
- Outer CV joint: Located at the wheel end. It handles the steering angles - up to 45-50 degrees of rotation. This is the one that clicks when it wears out because steering puts it through its maximum range of motion.
- Inner CV joint: Located at the transmission end. It handles the up-and-down suspension movement (called plunge). When this one fails, you usually feel a vibration or shudder during acceleration rather than clicking.
How CV Joints Fail
CV joints are incredibly durable - they can last 150,000+ miles when properly sealed and lubricated. The problem is the CV boot.
The CV Boot Tears
Every CV joint is covered by a flexible rubber boot shaped like an accordion. This boot keeps special grease packed inside the joint and keeps dirt, water, and road salt out. The boot flexes thousands of times per mile, and over time the rubber dries out, cracks, and tears.
Once the boot tears:
- The grease slings out (you may see dark grease splatter on the inside of the wheel or under the car)
- Dirt and water get inside the joint
- The bearing surfaces start grinding on contaminated surfaces
- The joint wears rapidly and starts clicking
If you catch a torn boot before the joint is damaged, you can replace just the boot for $150-$350 and save the joint. Once clicking starts, the joint is already damaged and needs replacement.
Warning Signs of CV Joint Failure
- Clicking while turning: The signature sign. Most noticeable at slow speeds in a parking lot with the wheel turned to full lock. The clicking comes from the outer joint on the side you are turning toward.
- Grease on the inside of the wheel: A torn boot slings grease everywhere. If you see dark grease on the inside of a wheel or on the inner fender, check the CV boot.
- Vibration during acceleration: A worn inner CV joint causes a vibration or shudder when accelerating, especially from a stop. It may feel similar to a tire balance problem but is speed-dependent rather than vehicle-speed-dependent.
- Clunking when shifting from reverse to drive: A worn CV joint has excess play that creates a clunk when the direction of force changes.
- Humming noise at highway speed: Advanced wear can create a constant humming that changes when you load or unload the joint (turning slightly at speed).
CV Axle Replacement vs. Joint Replacement
In the old days, mechanics would replace individual CV joints - press out the old one and press in a new one. Today, almost every shop replaces the entire CV axle (also called a half-shaft). Here is why:
- A remanufactured CV axle with new joints on both ends costs $80-$200 for the part
- Replacing just one CV joint takes nearly as much labor as replacing the whole axle
- The other joint on the same axle is the same age and may fail soon anyway
- New axle assemblies come pre-greased and pre-booted - less room for error
It simply makes more sense economically to replace the entire axle.
Repair Costs
- CV boot replacement (if caught early): $150-$350 per side
- CV axle replacement: $250-$600 per side (parts and labor)
- Both CV axles: $500-$1,100
Some vehicles are more expensive due to access difficulty. AWD vehicles with rear CV axles can cost more. Luxury and performance vehicles with specialized axles run higher as well.
Can You Drive on a Clicking CV Joint?
Yes, for a while. A clicking joint is worn but still functional. However:
- The clicking will get progressively louder and more frequent
- Eventually the joint can bind or seize, which can cause loss of power to that wheel
- In extreme cases, the axle shaft can break, drop to the ground, and either lock the wheel or cause serious damage to the transmission, brake lines, and body
I tell my customers: once it starts clicking, you have weeks to months, not years. Schedule the repair and avoid hard turns and aggressive acceleration in the meantime.
Which Cars Have CV Joints?
All front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles have CV joints on the front axles. Many AWD and 4WD vehicles also have them on the rear axles. Rear-wheel-drive vehicles with independent rear suspension also use CV joints. The only vehicles that typically do not have CV joints are rear-wheel-drive trucks and cars with solid rear axles.
Prevention
- Inspect CV boots during every oil change - A visual check takes seconds and catches tears early
- Do not ignore grease splatters - Grease on the inside of a wheel is a red flag
- Avoid deep water and mud - Water intrusion through a weakened boot accelerates joint failure
- Fix torn boots immediately - A $200 boot repair prevents a $500 axle replacement

Once that rubber protection is gone, failure is only a matter of time. Listen for clicking on turns, look for grease splatters, and inspect boots regularly. Catching a torn boot early is the cheapest way to avoid a full axle replacement.
